You've suffered too long with repeated bouts of sinusitis. The headaches and fatigue are bad enough, but now you have a terrible time trying to breathe through your nose. What can you do? Seek the advice of board-certified ear, nose, and throat specialist, Dr. Victor Strelzow. With wonderful results, he performs a minimally invasive sinusitis treatment in his Irvine, CA office called balloon sinuplasty.
What is sinusitis?
Sinusitis is an infection of the frontal sinuses in the face, and it plagues millions of people of all ages. An acute infection lasts up to four weeks, says the American Academy of Otolaryngology. However, if a patient suffers longer than that and has repeated bouts, then sinusitis is considered a chronic problem.
Symptoms of sinusitis include:
- inability to breathe freely through the nose
- Tenderness and swelling of the face
- Reduced ability to taste and smell
- Bad breath
For decades, otolaryngologists have treated chronic sinusitis with reconstructive surgery, saline sprays, inhaled steroids and antibiotics. However, some patients just do not respond to these interventions.
In 2005, the Food and Drug Administration cleared a minimally-invasive, in-office procedure called balloon sinuplasty, and your ear, nose and throat specialist in Irvine offers it to qualified patients. Here's how it works.
Dr. Strelzow uses a topical or local anesthetic to numb the nose and nasal passages. After the patient is comfortable, he gently inserts a wire catheter with an attached balloon. He then inflates the balloon with saline to reshape the congested area of the sinuses. He also instills saline solution in the sinuses themselves to clear out any mucus or pus.
Finally, Dr. Strelzow deflates the balloon and removes the catheter. In all, the procedure takes about an hour and is well-tolerated with a brief recovery time of one to two days.
Patients report a great reduction in symptoms and far fewer episodes after this procedure. Sinus passages are widened and remain open for freer breathing and less chance of infection.

Getting a good night’s rest doesn’t have to be difficult. We can help!
There is nothing worse than not getting quality sleep. Of course, if you are a snorer or someone dealing with a sleep disorder then you are no stranger to these miserable symptoms. You wake up feeling like you’re in a mental fog that you just can’t shake. Your body isn’t ready to get up and moving, and you’re pretty sure you could fall right back to sleep. Unfortunately, these symptoms don’t often improve much over the course of the day. If this sounds like you, our Irvine, CA, otolaryngologist Dr. Victor Strelzow is here to tell you what his team can do to help.
Better Sleep Hygiene
One of the things our Irvine, CA, ENT doctor will do is sit down with you and discuss your sleep habits. After all, a lot of people end up having bad sleep habits without ever knowing it. These problematic habits include watching TV or playing on the phone right before bed, which can easily mess up the quality of your sleep. We can provide you with a list of helpful tips for how to fall asleep faster and have a better night’s rest.
If you have obstructive sleep apnea this is a potentially serious sleep disorder that needs to be treated as soon as possible to prevent health complications like high blood pressure or a heart attack. CPAP therapy is the tried-and-true treatment for managing sleep apnea symptoms and helping you get better sleep. A mask is applied over the face and pressurized air is continuously administered through the mask to keep the airways open throughout the night.
If you have a serious snoring problem that is caused by vibrations from the uvula or soft palate, then we may recommend this procedure in which we use radiofrequency to tighten these structures within the mouth to prevent them from vibrating. Since the procedure stiffens the soft palate and uvula, it can make it less likely that you will snore. Since this procedure is minimally invasive, the recovery period is faster than with other surgical procedures.
If you have questions about the snoring and sleep disorder treatment we offer or you just want to find out which one will work best for you, then it’s time you schedule an appointment with our Irvine, CA, ENT specialist, Dr. Strelzow, today.

About Face & Neck Surgery
Reconstruction of the face and neck requires extensive training in soft tissue reconstruction techniques. Each situation requires a consultation with a face and neck surgery specialist in Irvine to determine the best approach to each patient’s surgery.
When considering a facial reconstruction surgery, the extent of the defect, the patient’s functional needs such as swallowing and the amount and type of tissue required are all important factors to consider. After the technique is decided upon, a patient will be notified of all the potential risks associated with the surgery.
After surgery, the patient spends the first night in the intensive care unit in the hospital where they are monitored closely. The patient will remain there for at least a week’s time so they are monitored closely to ensure proper healing. They will have check-ups with nurses, head and neck surgeons, plastic surgeons and therapists who all will guide their healing process.

Anyone who has ever had sinusitis knows that the congestion and stuffiness associated with it can make breathing difficult. For individuals who are afflicted with chronic sinusitis, having trouble breathing can be an ongoing struggle. Fortunately, there are sinusitis treatments in Irvine, CA, to help you breathe better. An experienced Ear, Nose and Throat doctor, such as Dr. Victor Strelzow, can help you determine which treatment method might be most effective for you.
What is Sinusitis?
Sinusitis is a sinus infection caused by inflammation or a blockage in the pathways that help the sinuses drain. When the sinus pathways are blocked or swollen due to inflammation, they cannot drain properly, which can lead to congestion, trouble breathing, sinus headaches and other symptoms. Antibiotics and nasal decongestants can provide some relief from the symptoms of sinusitis. However, individuals who struggle with chronic sinusitis can benefit from more advanced treatment methods, such as endoscopic sinus surgery.
Before a particular treatment method is chosen, Dr. Strelzow will perform diagnostic testing during your in-office exam in order to accurately diagnose your specific sinus problems(s). Once a diagnosis has been made, possible treatments for sinusitis include endoscopic sinus surgery and balloon sinuplasty dilation procedure. Not all Ear, Nose and Throat doctors are able to provide these particular sinusitis treatments in Irvine, CA. Be sure to see a doctor with experience performing these procedures.
Endoscopic sinus surgery can provide long-lasting relief from chronic sinusitis. During the surgical procedure, a tool called an endoscope is placed inside the nose. The endoscope allows the doctor to clearly view the sinuses and clear them of any blockages, such as excessive tissue, small portions of bone or eve polyps. The procedure typically takes between 30 and 90 minutes to complete and patients go home the same day. Follow-up appointments are needed for a few weeks following surgery so that the doctor can clear out any mucus or dried blood.
Balloon sinuplasty is an alternative method to endoscopic sinus surgery for treating chronic sinusitis. This method does not involve cutting any tissue or bone. During the procedure, a flexible balloon catheter is inserted into the sinus pathways. Once inside, the balloon is inflated. As it inflates, the sinus pathways begin to expand. Saline is then sprayed inside the sinuses, which helps flush out mucus and anything else clogging up the sinuses. After flushing out the sinuses, the balloon catheter is removed and the sinuses remain open and clear.
Sinusitis can make it difficult to breathe easily, but there are treatments that can help you breathe better. In Irvine, sinusitis treatment is available from the office of Dr. Strelzow. To schedule an appointment, call the office at (949) 753-9299.
